Castiglione Names Five Streets, Addresses Traffic and Sewer Issues
The issue of double I Maggio Street is nearing resolution: the Commissione toponomastica (Toponymy Commission) has assigned five new names to streets in the densely populated neighborhood in the northern part of Castiglione. These days, residents are receiving forms in every mailbox to be sent back to the municipality, through which they will obtain their new house numbers.
In addition to various local artists who will give names to some cross streets (Marini, Beschi, Mutti, Guidetti), Pietro Nenni will name what until recently was called the second I Maggio Street. “After about ten years,” comments the consul, Silvio Zuccati, “we have managed to achieve this result.”
In a document drafted by the quartiere committee (neighborhood committee), there is expressed satisfaction with some important interventions in the area, carried out by the municipal administration: the cycling path, sports fields and children’s areas, lighting, connection with via Isabella d’Este, the fencing of the Arnò canal, and the waste separation project for organic and dry waste, in collaboration with the Int.Dep.Cast.
Issues Still to Address: Traffic and Sewers
However, some issues remain unresolved, primarily concerning traffic flow and sewage systems. “An intervention on via Lonato is considered necessary,” states the notice, “as it has become a main artery after the opening of the bypass with the Esenta exit and one-way traffic towards the historic center.
Hence, the proposal to build a roundabout at the intersection with via Cicalaio, both to reduce vehicle speeds and to facilitate vehicle entries from the cross streets onto via Lonato.” Additionally, residents of I Maggio believe that the main street of the neighborhood should be repaved, and a no-parking zone on one side of the streets should be implemented to improve traffic flow.
Furthermore, a plan is needed to connect the cycling path, which ends at the ecological parking lot near the swimming pool area, with the main roads of the historic center. Regarding sewage systems, the document signed by consul Zuccati states: “An urgent intervention is needed on the sewer network of via I Maggio, because the crossing of pipes from Nenni and Lonato streets has not resolved the backflow problem, which still persists.”
