Lake Garda Levels Drop Significantly Amid Calls for Regulation Changes

The lake level finally drops decisively and convincingly: according to the Community, with the outflow at Peschiera fixed at 190 cubic meters per second (the maximum), Garda is decreasing by 3 centimeters per day and was around 160 in the morning of yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Riva City Council approved unanimously, on the proposal of Margherita group leader Paolo Matteotti, a document noting that Lake Garda has now been reduced to an artificial reservoir regulated according to the needs of the Mantovan farmland, and that recent days saw no major damage only because any wave motion has always been absent. Riva is calling for a reconsideration of the minimum and maximum levels established by the Commission in 1984.

Request for revision of lake level standards

Indeed, according to Matteotti, there would have been grounds in this episode to lower the lake level at the end of October, before the start of the heavy rains in November.

It remains doubtful, however, whether in autumn the limit of 80 centimeters, which is supposed to be reached by September 10, was actually respected.
