Gardesana Occidentale Crisis: Public Talks, Traffic Disruptions & Solutions

The Regional Territory Committee (president Margherita Peroni) will hear today from Bruno Faustini, president of the Comunità Montana Parco Alto Garda, regarding the dire situation of the battered Gardesana Occidentale. Faustini will, of course, emphasize the needs of the local population.

Additionally, another meeting is already scheduled for next Thursday, this time at the Comunità di Villa di Gargnano headquarters. On that day, the provincial Public Works Committee, chaired by Bruno Rossini, will convene.

Meeting and High-Level Discussions on Gardesana

The key moment will be Tuesday, January 30th, at 5 p.m., when a summit is scheduled in Rome, requested by Brescia parliamentarian Aldo Rebecchi, and expected to be attended by the Minister of Public Works Nerio Nesi.

Representatives of local institutions (Municipalities, Comunità Montana, Province, and the regions of Brescia and Trento, Lombardia Region) will be invited.

Meanwhile, late Tuesday afternoon, the Prefecture hosted yet another summit on Gardesana, attended by the new prefect Anna Maria Cancellieri, with the participation of Franco Nicoli Cristiani (regional assessor for Quality of the Environment), Mauro Parolini (provincial colleague for Public Works); as well as Bruno Faustini and mayors of upper Garda.

Issues and Implications of the Road Blockade

Questions are also raised about the upcoming tourist season and the negative repercussions that a continued blockage would have on the entire upper Garda area of Brescia.

Meanwhile, traveling along Gardesana these days offers a strange experience: extremely light traffic, far from the levels typically seen even during quieter periods like the current one.

For local drivers (workers, employees, caretakers), driving on the semi-deserted highway can sometimes feel like a gymnastics obstacle course, and for the kilometers of road north of Gargnano, consulting signs and clocks is necessary to time the openings correctly.

It’s known that since December 22nd, it has been impossible to go up the road to Riva, due to the landslide at Rocchetta just south of the Trentino city. But in addition to this impossibility of reaching Trentino from here (except by ferry, which also involves long queues), there are other complicated obstacles.

Traffic Issues and Temporary Solutions

Between Gargnano and Tignale, work is underway at the “Dossi” to where the old road leading to the Muslone hamlet departs. Here, stops happen suddenly (while workers operate on the cliff face), and drivers are often forced to wait over twenty minutes before receiving the go-ahead.

The first viable option then emerges: turning onto the provincial road to Tignale, then continuing along the “Tignalga” route through Tremosine and descending to Campione or Limone. Alternatively, checking the clock shows that reaching Campione, Tremosine, and Limone is also possible via Gardesana, but with caution to avoid traffic blockages at Forbisicle (south of Campione).

Here, passage is permitted in the evening and at night (from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.) and during the lunch break (from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.). However, this closure has been extended by Anas until February 10th.

For those going to Limone, the uncertainty remains at Nanzel (south of the town), where cars can pass in the morning from 7:15 to 8:15; mid-day (from 12:30 to 1:30); and in the evening from 5 to 8 p.m.

On Saturday afternoons, transit is allowed from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In short, the situation remains highly complex for drivers wishing to travel from Gargnano to Limone along the state road during weekdays. As seen, passage depends on meticulous and punctual time monitoring.
