Intermunicipal Dog Shelter Project Approved for Lower Lake Area
In a few weeks, the municipal council will approve the executive project for the construction of the intermunicipal dog shelter, which will cost 1.3 billion euros.
The investment will be shared among the three municipalities that have joined the initiative (Calcinato’s participation ultimately did not materialize), building upon an old idea from a few years ago by the then mayor of Sirmione, Mario Arduino.
The facility will be built on an agricultural land previously purchased, near the village of Centenaro.
The shelter will accommodate approximately 200 animals (dogs and cats) and will include a caretaker’s residence, veterinary services, and outpatient clinics.
The operating expenses will, of course, be divided among the three cooperating municipalities: Desenzano, Sirmione, and Montichiari. They hope that this will help address the issue of stray animals and abandonment, which also has significant dimensions in the lower lake area.
Many animals meet a horrible end on highways or along the various fast-moving roads, often causing traffic accidents and injuries.
Fortunately, many of them have found refuge over the years thanks to volunteers working in local associations.
