Trento Begins Construction of Limone-Riva Tunnel and Shoreline Revamp

The construction works for the new tunnel connecting Limone to Riva with remediation measures began on Monday.

The project has been entrusted by the Provincia autonoma di Trento to the companies Oberosler-Collini, two firms that «to meet the commitment», explains engineer Paolo Nicolussi Paolaz from the public works department of the Province of Trento, «have temporarily merged».

The 960 meters of tunnel and 160 meters of service tunnel will be excavated into the rock at an average rate of 21 meters per day.

For four months, 24 hours a day, 70 workers will be working. The drills will simultaneously bore from three different points: north, south, and east, i.e., the Limone, Riva, and lake sides.

In other words, the hole drilled from the east side will intersect perpendicularly with the tunnel being excavated by the drills positioned on the north and south sides.

The material excavated from the mountain has been estimated at 90,000 cubic meters. This means that over 120 days, 150 trucks loaded with debris will shuttle back and forth.

Construction Timeline and Use of Excavated Material

In Trento, officials have confirmed that the first phase of work will be completed by the end of July, and the tunnel will be passable from that point onward.

After the summer break, the second phase of the project will commence, focusing on finishing works.

The people of Trento have planned to utilize the material excavated from the Rivese side to expand the lungolago D’Annunzio in Riva; the shoreline area near the Ponale hydroelectric plant will be redeveloped with gardens, parking lots, gazebos, and other support structures.

For this phase, the Comune di Riva has already allocated 500 million euros.
