Castiglione: Carabinieri Barracks, Hospital Concerns, and Land Projects

Several topics were discussed at the city council meeting on Monday evening, with the main focus on the Carabinieri barracks. The assembly approved the agreement between the municipality and the company Rudiana, a final act that is expected to definitively unblock the start of the works.

The agreement aims to protect the company in case the Ministry of the Interior decides in the future not to make use of the building, which will be located near the intersection between the former Goitese and via Gnutti.

On the proposal of minority councilor Paganella, it was specified in the text that the barracks will house the Carabinieri company, that is, a substantial unit of soldiers tasked with overseeing security throughout Alta Mantovano.

Votes and internal disagreements

Unanimous approval, although Ulivo and Rifondazione abstained due to technical concerns, for the approval of the agreement, with the majority thanking the opposition for their constructive attitude and especially the mayor Sigurtà for his tenacious efforts to bring the long-standing issue to a close.

However, the session opened with a rupture within the civic group Castiglione Domani: councilor Mognetti, who is at odds with his party, declared that, due to unresolved issues within the majority, he will now vote on measures on a case-by-case basis in council, without party directives.

Already on the agreement between the municipality and Int.Dep.Cast. regarding the castle parking lot — approved by the civic groups and by Saviola (DS), and opposed by Paganella’s group and Rifondazione — Mognetti distinguished himself with a solitary abstention.

Matters concerning the hospital

Also on the agenda was a document, read by assessor Biaggi, concerning the hospital. Unanimously, a text was approved expressing concern over the lack of decisions by the general management of the Hospital Company, and over the rumored cuts to departments and services at San Pellegrino.

The councilors strongly demanded the strengthening of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the opening of the already established Coronary Unit to support Cardiology.

Concerns were also raised regarding the abandoned state of the former Opg buildings located in the city center, the non-implementation of the new hospital wing (already funded), and the need to repurpose the Ghisiola buildings for new rehabilitation ward services.

Land developments and management of historical archives

Additionally, approval was given for two residential land developments totaling 4,000 square meters, located in via Leoncavallo and Gozzolina.

Finally, a unanimous agreement was reached on a pact among the municipalities of Castiglione, Solferino, Cavriana, Medole, and Ponti sul Mincio for the organization and management of the local historical archives.
