Regional and Institutional Efforts to Revamp Brescia Airport Operations

Region would also have taken pen to paper to intervene significantly in the ongoing saga.

It would have started from Milan, under the signature of the Massimo Corsaro assessor, a letter to Minister Bersani asking him to postpone the awarding of the Brescia-based facility to the Verona-based Catullo company, which has been awaiting a comprehensive concession for the two airports from Rome.

Positions and interventions of institutions

Ultimately, this is the same position expressed in a previous letter from the unions, which clearly proposed removing Montichiari from the overwhelming influence of the Veronese, with a subsequent call for a new tender for the concession.

This is also the same request made in a complaint to the TAR by Orio al Serio, arguing that concessions should be awarded through a bidding process.

However, while union representatives feared falling from the frying pan into the fire, ending up as a branch of another airport, the Region asserts an important role for Montichiari within the Lombard airport system, especially for goods, based on studies already presented at a recent conference.

The situation at D’Annunzio and institutional responses

In the case of D’Annunzio, which is in crisis after the suspension of connections with the capital, Mayor Corsini also issued a statement, hoping for “a surge of Brescia pride,” and offering the Municipality’s support for a management company with a majority local stake to ensure the airport’s decision-making and financial independence.

Too many opportunities have been missed so far, such as the indifference to the interest shown by the American company Damg, ready to invest to turn Montichiari into an international logistics hub.

The weight of competition, and not just that from Villafranca, perhaps crushes every proposal? questions the mayor.

Meanwhile, Catullo is working in various directions to find an operator in Rome; talks have been held about Volare, Alpi Eagles, and even Alpitour, but rumors circulate and no results have been achieved so far.

Positive news and future initiatives

The only small positive note: starting next Wednesday, the «Bottega dei viaggi» in Gardone Valtrompia will weekly offer a charter service to Tunisia and back.
