Mayor Sigurtà Pushes for Awnings Regulation to Improve Pedestrian Safety
No controversy from merchants following the words of Mayor Sigurtà regarding shop awnings. The mayor had asked store owners to adjust their awning heights so as not to obstruct pedestrians, especially with umbrellas.
Merchants’ opinions on the awnings
“I’ve had them for over thirty years,” comments the jeweler from Piazza Dallò. “Back then, it was enough to request a permit. Anyway, I agree with the mayor that low awnings are bothersome to passersby, especially if they have umbrellas. In fact, I would also be in favor of a general regulation regarding the colors of the fabrics.”
In short, if there is a regulation, it must be respected, and if necessary, measures will be taken to bring the awnings up to standard. This is the view of the merchants in the historic center, although those with fixed curtains will face more difficulties than mobile ones, since they will need to remove the framework and reposition it on the facade.
The mayor’s initiatives
On another note, Mayor Sigurtà’s crusade to defend pedestrians, of which he reaffirms he is part, continues: from regulating the height of awnings to freeing sidewalks from cars, to parking discipline and the installation of curb blocks to slow vehicle speeds downtown.
To avoid conflicts with shopkeepers, Sigurtà proposes: “Anyone who had a permit for their awning in the past and now needs to move it will have the expenses covered by the municipality.”
