Montichiari Airport Plans Cargo Hub and New Airline Connections

The clearance of buildings around Montichiari airport, which are still occupied by military personnel, was the focus of an inspection held between Catullo president Fernando Sanson and several officers of the Italian Army. In particular, attention was directed toward the large hangar, which will be vacated by the end of April for a subsequent assessment of the structure’s condition.

The reconversion of the hangar is the first step toward establishing a cargo freight terminal, which, Sanson reiterates, is a strategic choice for the development of the “Gabriele D’Annunzio” Airport in Montichiari. “Cargo operations in Brescia are among our priorities,” confirms the president of the Verona airport. However, the timeline will not be very quick, as the transfer of the areas will require a fairly lengthy process involving several entities: from the Army to the Italian Air Force, up to the Ministry of Transport.

Connections and new airlines

The passenger flight routes remain uncertain, especially regarding the connection with Rome, which has been suspended by Air Dolomiti. Sanson confirms that negotiations are ongoing with at least one or two airlines. The news of an imminent new Brescia-based airline is welcomed with satisfaction by the Catullo president: “We will be very happy to establish relations with Brescia entrepreneurs.”

Meanwhile, airlines in Verona are exerting pressure to move flights to Montichiari. In particular, charter flights that will increase over the summer months along Lake Garda. The Catullo airport has now reached saturation; the closure of the 3rd Stormo has not freed up space at all, and passenger traffic growth forecasts make a second airport essential for planning activities.
