Lake Garda Gets Ready for Wave of German Tourists with Traffic and Port Measures

As of today, Holy Thursday, the impact of the largest wave of German tourists on vacation at Lake Garda is anticipated. An emergency plan has been activated: municipal police officers, who are on duty to prevent traffic jams in Piazza Catena, will double their presence to four officers—two at a time during two shifts from morning to evening—alongside interpreters (three throughout the day) to monitor the blockade at via Monte Oro.

Yesterday, despite the coinciding monthly market and the already significant and continuous increase in tourist traffic, the situation went relatively well.

Signage and Detours

Under the coordination of the province, signs indicating the closure of the Western route are being installed, suggesting the alternative route Affi-Desenzano-Salò. In total, 35 signboards will be placed in areas such as Torbole, Mori, on the highway, at the exits of Trento, San Michele, and Rovereto: wherever it’s possible to attract the attention of motorists heading to Limone to inform them of what awaits and to suggest alternatives.

Everything possible has been done: Navigarda may try to streamline and facilitate ticket sales and boarding procedures.

Boats and Port Works

The pier for boarding has also proven to be undersized: some buses are forced to remove their side mirrors to board the ferry, or else they would hit them.

There is hope that the two larger vessels, Brennero and Tonale, will be moved to the Riva-Limone quay.

Works at the Tunnel and Connected Construction Sites

The tunnel excavation is progressing according to the planned schedule. From the Riva side, the depth of 50 meters has been reached; twice that from the southern side, from Limone.

The central service gallery is nearly finished: 130 of the 156 meters planned have been excavated. By the end of the month, the construction site will be working at all four fronts: mid-June remains a credible deadline to complete the excavation (followed by one month for wall lining, installation, and paving of the transit surface).

Today, work continues on the construction site: from tomorrow until Monday of Easter, inclusive, operations will be halted. Resumption at full pace is scheduled for Tuesday the 17th.
