Hyak Sailing Project Boosts Mental Health Rehabilitation at Salò Center

Axé is also used for the rehabilitation of people suffering from mental illnesses. This is the case of the “Hyak” project implemented by the Centro psico sociale di Salò, a unit of Psichiatrica 21 of the Desenzano Hospital Trust.

Objectives and features of the project

The clinical condition of the patients is characterized by symptoms such as social isolation and autism, an extreme state of a mental disorder that leads to withdrawal and abandonment of all life projects. Through sailing, the aim is to promote the recovery of social skills and adherence to rules by sharing a place and a common activity.

Sailing, an activity in which collaboration, solidarity, and sharing the same goal are essential aspects, appears to be an effective rehabilitation tool.

Origins and supporters

The initiative originated from an idea by educator Bernardo Olivetti and Dr. Marcello Kreiner, supported by the head of Psychiatry Gianluigi Nobili. It benefits from the logistical support of the Canottieri Garda di Salò society, which is adjacent to the hospital.

The Hyak project has shown positive results, encouraging the promoters to develop it further. It was strongly supported by the management of the Desenzano Hospital Trust.
