Municipal Water Use Ordinance Ignored Amid Rising Consumption, Authorities Respond
The mayor’s ordinance to limit the use of drinking water is not being widely observed, and consumption is increasing.
This behavior could cause significant difficulties for the pumping and lifting systems located within the municipal territory during the hot season and the peak tourist influx.
The mayor’s ordinance explicitly prohibits the use of water for watering gardens and cleaning streets or squares between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.
However, water use is permitted from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Offenders will face an administrative fine of 300,000 lire.
Interventions and awareness regarding water usage
The strong urbanization, especially in the areas of Colà, Barun, Casara, and Mata, has forced the municipal administration to create new wells and a new water network to meet the water needs.
“There must also be education on the use of water,” states Fabio Marinoni, councillor for the Pacengo district, “because today more than ever, water is a precious resource.”
Indiscriminate use, not for human purposes, leads to a serious depletion of groundwater, especially in summer when the population triples compared to winter, resulting in unforeseen shortages that cause protests and complaints from residents.
The ordinance was issued precisely to safeguard consumption but also, and especially, to provide adequate and continuous service to citizens and tourists.
The patrols by municipal police and carabinieri have already begun.
