Seismic History of Garda: Major Earthquakes from 1000 to Present

The earthquake the other day is just the latest evidence of the seismicity of the Garda area, where over the centuries at least twenty earthquakes with an intensity exceeding seventh degree on the Mercalli scale have been recorded.

In the year 1000, an earthquake occurred that, based on historical sources, scholars now assign a 9th degree. An event with an 8th degree was recorded on April 11, 1094, with its epicenter in Verona.

Historical seismic events in the past

The series continues: 1095, 8th degree, epicenter in Verona; January 3, 117, 11th degree, epicenter beneath Monte Baldo; 1183, Verona, 8th degree; December 25, 1222, Brescia, 9th degree; December 4, 1334, Monte Baldo, 9th degree.

All devastating events: then seismic activity subsided for several centuries.

More recent events

More recently, a magnitude 8 earthquake was recorded, with its epicenter on Monte Baldo, on April 20, 1876; an 8th degree quake with epicenter in Verona on June 7, 1891; and a 7th degree Mercalli intensity on February 19, 1932, again with the epicenter in Monte Baldo.

The recent one, in comparison, was just a small tremor.
