Discover Chinese Rugs and Silk Road Heritage at Brescia Exhibition

Chinese carpets and textile arts from the Silk Road are on display at the MITA Cultural Center in Brescia, featuring approximately 40 pieces from the museum’s collection and artifacts from Xinjiang, including Kashgar, Yarkand, and Khotan. The exhibition presents a chronological and geographical journey from Central Asian interior regions to urban production centers, highlighting the historical significance of Khotan as a Buddhist kingdom along trade routes to Nanjing and Beijing.

The exhibit showcases motifs with religious, cosmological, and imperial symbolism, such as Buddha discs, solar crosses, and mythical figures like dragons and bats. It features large, geometrically elegant imperial carpets, some dating to the 18th and 19th centuries, with bold colors like yellow, blue, and pink, and designs including lotus flowers and stylized animals. The display emphasizes the cultural and artistic connections along the Silk Road, with a focus on regional craftsmanship and iconography.
