Korean Mosquito Threatens Trento: One Health Initiative Under Scrutiny

Aedes koreicus, an invasive mosquito species of Asian origin, was the focus of a recent workshop in Trento aimed at improving understanding of its spread and potential health risks. Participants from Fondazione Mach and MUSE discussed surveillance strategies, data sharing, and research priorities within the One Health framework to assess the species’ capacity to transmit pathogens.

The mosquito, resembling the tiger mosquito but more cold-resistant, is now established in several municipalities in Trentino, with peak activity between July and September. Local monitoring efforts, supported by Fondazione Mach and MUSE, include experiments on temperature response and collaborations with municipal authorities as part of the European MSCA-PF IFTAMED project.
