The municipal council of Lonato del Garda approved, during the session on October 15, the executive project for the redevelopment of **Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII**, located in the area known as “Lonato 2.” This initiative aims to enhance a space that has always had the potential to host events and activities, thanks to its large surface area and green spaces.

## Features of the Square

The square covers a total area of approximately **4,300 m²**. In the northern part, there is a large public lawn, while the southern section features a semicircular space surrounded by steps, walkways, and large planters, creating an amphitheater effect ideal for outdoor events. However, the current brick finishes show signs of deterioration due to atmospheric erosion, deformation caused by vegetation, and vandalism.

## Objectives of the Project

The municipal administration intends to initiate redevelopment works to restore a vital hub for the social life of the neighborhood. The total investment is estimated at **200,000 euros**, primarily funded by municipal resources and a portion from the regional call “Commerce Districts 2022-2024.”

## Planned Interventions

The scheduled works include extraordinary maintenance aimed at improving both the safety and functionality of the square. Among the main interventions will be the removal of four pillars located at the sides of the pergola, which currently obstruct access for vehicles. This modification will also facilitate maintenance operations for the amphitheater and the surrounding areas.

Additionally, there will be work on the paving and cleaning of surfaces; enhancements to the square’s lighting are also planned, particularly along pedestrian paths. New benches will be installed along the edges of the green area to encourage residents to utilize the space.

## Institutional Statements

Mayor Roberto Tardani stated: “The administration’s commitment to redeveloping the territory continues. In the specific case of Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII, we are talking about extraordinary maintenance interventions; therefore, the layout will not be changed, but we aim to restore optimal conditions so that it can be enjoyed by the community.”

The works are set to begin in **2025**, with completion anticipated before the start of the summer season, marking an important step towards the renewal of public spaces in the Lonato 2 neighborhood.
