In November, a month that draws attention to violence against women, the Ateneo di Salò is organizing two events dedicated to exploring the female figure through the project “Stories of Mythical Women: Figures from the Botturi Collection.” These meetings will take place on Friday, November 8, and Friday, November 15, 2024, starting at 5:00 PM.

A Recognized Cultural Heritage

The title of the initiative refers to the Botturi Collection, a significant collection donated to the Ateneo di Salò in 2022. This collection not only includes books and magazines but also over five hundred engravings dating from the 17th to the 19th century. The works encompass etchings, lithographs, and hand-colored prints depicting mythological and religious scenes, as well as views of urban and rural contexts. The prints come from some of the most illustrious artists of the Italian and European tradition, providing a broad overview of the artistic techniques used throughout the centuries.

Themes of the Meetings

During the first meeting titled “Myth and Its Sources: Between Literature and Art,” the relationship between mythological literature and its artistic representations will be analyzed. The second appointment, “Icono/graphies: Art Print,” will allow participants to delve into selected prints from an iconographic perspective, including a practical workshop to explore the artistic object directly.

Fundamental Questions About Myth

The days will be dedicated to reflections on crucial questions: What is myth really? What is the significance of the stories surrounding these heroines? How have they been represented over time? And why can we still define them as “mythical women”? Such questions aim to stimulate a deep discussion on the contemporary relevance of female figures in ancient myths.

Enhancing Cultural Heritage

The Ateneo di Salò is committed to enhancing its cultural heritage with the goal of spreading knowledge and culture. This initiative symbolically connects to the figure of Athena, the goddess of Wisdom, highlighting the importance of education in understanding women’s history.

The meetings will be held at the Auditorium of the Salòtto della Cultura in Salò, creating a space to explore historical themes with contemporary resonances.
