Italian Crested Newt Spotted in 2019 in Bergamo-Brescia Lake Basin

The Italian crested newt (*Triturus carnifex*), a protected species and a biological indicator of water quality, was recorded in 2019 in the lower lake basin during surveys by WWF Bergamo Brescia. The amphibian was found in ponds, reedbeds and wetlands, where males develop a dorsal crest during the breeding season. Its presence indicated suitable habitat, prompting monitoring and research activities in the area from 2019 onward.

Subsequent sightings and field checks confirmed the species’ continued presence. Researchers, volunteers and WWF Bergamo Brescia carried out repeated surveys to assess the condition of the ponds, reedbeds and wetlands used by the newt, leading to the establishment of a dedicated protected area (oasis) and ongoing campaigns to track habitat status.
