Drought Cuts Lake Garda Inflow to 28 Cubic Meters Per Second

The flow from Lake Garda will be reduced starting this evening to 28 cubic meters per second, following an agreement reached by the Comunità del Garda, the Consorzio del Mincio, and AIPO after weeks of low rainfall and falling water levels. Rain today enabled an initial recovery, bringing the lake level back to more than 50 centimeters above the hydrometric zero point at Peschiera.

The reduction will be applied at the Garda regulating facility and concerns direct discharges toward the Mincio. The deal was developed through talks involving Consorzio president Massimo Lorenzi and the entities responsible for managing the basin’s water systems. During the most difficult months, downstream users had already drawn less than permitted under existing rules, and the new measure is intended to prevent further declines in the coming weeks.

According to Lombardy regional councillor Sertori, the lake has withstood the most critical phase and can support the remaining summer water uses. The updated regulation must balance human and drinking water supply, agricultural, tourism, industrial, hydropower and thermal needs, while also protecting fish populations and the wider lake ecosystem. The Comunità del Garda will continue daily coordination with stakeholders, monitoring water levels and weather conditions.
