Italian and Greek Risorgimento Conference Held in Desenzano del Garda

A conference on “Italian Risorgimento and Greek Risorgimento: between civic commitment and transnational volunteering” will be held on Friday, 25 September, at the Sala della Musa of the Civic Library “Angelo Anelli” in Rivoltella. The event runs from 10:00 and brings together Italian and Greek scholars, with translation provided by Evangelhos Apostolòpoulos of the Hellenic Community in Brescia. It is organised by the “Faro Tricolore” Cultural Association in Desenzano del Garda together with the National Association of Garibaldian Veterans and Veterans of the Garibaldian Campaign “Giuseppe Garibaldi”.

The programme is split into two sessions: from 10:00 to 12:30 in the morning, featuring talks on Greek revolution and Italian philhellenism, transnational mobility and networks within the Garibaldian volunteer movement (1860–1912), and a report on Antonio Fratti, the hero of Domokos; and from 14:30 to 18:00 in the afternoon, with presentations on volunteering and national expectations in the 1897 Greco-Turkish war, Garibaldian expeditions in Greece from the late 19th to the early 20th century, and Italian-Greek connections between armed volunteering and national movements in the 19th century. A delegation from the Municipality of Domokos (Thessaly) is also attending, where in May 1897 the battle took place in which Garibaldi volunteers led by Ricciotti Garibaldi fought alongside Greeks against Ottoman forces still occupying parts of Greece; Italian MP Antonio Fratti died in the fighting, and his remains were brought to Italy in the early 1900s on the initiative of Giuseppe Zanardelli. Next year will mark the 130th anniversary of the battle.
