The culinary landscape of Gardone Riviera is entering a new era with the Massari family taking over the historic Palazzo Wimmer. For the fine dining restaurant located on the upper floor of the elegant building, the family has appointed Chef Alessandro Proietti Refrigeri. The 1988-born Roman chef brings a stellar resume, having earned a Michelin star in 2019 at Villa Naj in Stradella and a second one in 2023 at La Coldana in Lodi, following prestigious experiences as sous chef at Noma in Copenhagen and La Pergola in Rome under Heinz Beck.
The Massari Project in Gardone Riviera
The ambitious project follows the 25-year concession of the municipally-owned building to the company led by master pastry chef Iginio Massari and his children, Nicola and Debora. The venue is situated just a short distance from the monumental Vittoriale degli Italiani, adding another layer of excellence to the cultural and gastronomic offer of the western shore.
The multi-level lakeside palace will host the signature Massari pastry shop on the ground floor, while the upper level will be dedicated to the exclusive 40-seat gastronomic restaurant steered by Proietti Refrigeri.
From Kurhaus to Fine Dining
Palazzo Wimmer boasts a fascinating history. Built in 1909 as a Kurhaus (spa resort), it served as an entertainment hub for the wealthy foreign clientele who had transformed Gardone into a prestigious health resort. The elegant halls hosted concerts, grand balls, and even a casino, which was later closed during the fascist era.
After World War II, the building was converted into a cinema, operating until 2004. Between 2015 and 2021, the Art Nouveau structure underwent a comprehensive restoration, preparing it for its new life. The upcoming culinary proposal promises to blend Italian tradition with international techniques, honoring the cosmopolitan heritage of the palace.
