Caspoggio and Disused Facilities: Climate Change Threatens Winter Tourism

Recent analyses by Legambiente highlight how the abandoned facilities in Caspoggio are emblematic of the climate change affecting alpine locations. In recent decades, there has been a decrease in snow cover of over 34%, with anomalous temperatures exceeding 3000 meters in altitude, typically only observed in summer. Andrea Omizzolo from EURAC Research emphasizes the vulnerability of low-altitude ski resorts, stressing the urgent need to reassess investments in the sector.

In this context, Lorenzo Baio from Legambiente stated that it is essential to rethink the mountain tourism offer, moving beyond just downhill skiing and developing sustainable alternatives. With Christmas approaching and unfavorable climatic conditions for natural snow, there is a risk that the costs of artificially snowing the slopes will become unsustainable. The call is therefore to abandon outdated projects and enhance natural environments to attract more responsible and conscious tourism.
