Yesterday, a meeting was held at the Gavardo hospital, attended by mayors from the Valsabbia and Alto Garda mountain communities, medical staff, and local political representatives. The Welfare Councillor of the Lombardy Region, Guido Bertolaso, provided assurances regarding the future of the services offered by the healthcare facility.
Assurances on Healthcare Services
The councillor clarified that the hospital will not undergo a gradual downsizing, contrary to recent claims made by citizens’ committees that have organized initiatives and sit-ins in protest. These concerns arose following the closure of the maternity ward last July and the reported cuts in departments such as orthopedics and pediatrics.
Challenges to Address
During the discussion, several challenges afflicting the Gavardo hospital were highlighted. These include a shortage of medical personnel and difficulties related to housing for staff. Additionally, the lack of adequate beds in essential departments such as geriatrics, internal medicine, orthopedics, and surgery was emphasized. Another issue pertains to the limited funding allocated for the construction and maintenance of hospital facilities and community health centers in the surrounding municipalities, including Gavardo, Nozza, Salò, and Gargnano.
Commitment to the Future of Services
Despite the current challenges related to the shortage of doctors and nurses affecting many areas of Lombardy, Bertolaso confirmed the Region’s commitment to ensuring the services available at the hospital. In particular, he announced the intention to restore the pediatrics department to full operation to meet the needs of the citizens.
