A podcast dedicated to Giuseppe Gerola, known as the “monument man” from Trentino, is now available on the Castello del Buonconsiglio’s Spotify channel. This podcast tells the life story of Gerola, one of the most charismatic figures in the history of art in Trentino and Italy from the late 19th century to the early decades of the 20th century.
Actor Andrea Deanesi collaborated with the museum staff, particularly Elisa Colla, Morena Dallemule, Alessandro Ferrini, Amina Hussein, and Claudio Strocchi, to create this podcast. Over eight episodes, the human and professional history of Gerola will be explored, from his childhood to his arrival in Trento at the end of World War I.
Gerola is famous for organizing the first structure for the protection and conservation of Trentino’s cultural heritage and was the first director of the Castello del Buonconsiglio museum, which opened in 1924. During the years from 1919 to 1923, after the annexation of Trentino to the Kingdom of Italy, Gerola recovered numerous artistic treasures that had migrated to Austrian territory.
Among the most important pieces that Gerola brought back to the Castello del Buonconsiglio are the 5th-century Purple Parchment Gospel, the 1042 Udalrician Sacramentary, the 15th-century Trentino Music Codes, and many other archaeological artifacts and ancient volumes. He also worked on the recovery of archives that had migrated across the Alps during the 19th century.
The podcast will be released in eight episodes, with the last one being uploaded on April 27th, to coincide with the Museum’s Centenary. This series of episodes provides a unique opportunity to learn about the life and work of Giuseppe Gerola, a key figure in the history of art in Trentino and Italy.
