A new Aldi supermarket has opened in Desenzano del Garda, marking the fourteenth store in the city, which ranks among the top in Italy for the number of supermarkets per capita. With a retail space of 600 square meters and 80 parking spaces, the store operates from 8 AM to 9 PM. This opening is part of a broader trend of growth in organized large-scale distribution (Gdo) in the area, where there is one supermarket for every 2,000 residents, nearly double the national average.
The opening has sparked controversy regarding its location on Via Rimembranze, near the cemetery, and the implications for the availability of spaces for subsidized housing. Currently, there are over 40 medium-sized retail outlets in Desenzano, and the competition among Gdo giants like Conad, Lidl, and Aldi continues to intensify, suggesting further potential commercial development in the region, driven by tourism.
