The Historic Gates of Lonato: Porta Corlo and the Risorgimento Columns
The urban history of The Historic Gates of Lonato reveals centuries of fortification, destruction, and civic memory, from Berengario I’s 10th-century concession to the devastating 1339 siege between Lodrisio Visconti and Azzone Visconti.
While the medieval fortifications were dismantled in 1817, elegant 19th-century Risorgimento gates with wrought-iron railings and white stone pillars replaced them. After the demolition of Porta Verona in 1906 and Porta Corlo following World War I, their marble segments lay scattered for decades.
In 2025, a sensitive urban restoration recovered the original stone segments, re-erecting the twin columns in Piazza Corlo in front of the historic church and Disciplini hospice, creating an evocative open-air monument to Lonato’s heritage.
