Lake Garda is facing a critical environmental situation, with water levels declining compared to last year. By the end of August 2023, the lake’s level was +93 cm above the hydrometric zero in Peschiera, three centimeters lower than in 2022. Despite the abundant spring rains and the thunderstorms during the Ferragosto holiday that had temporarily replenished the basin, August saw a significant decrease of 23 centimeters in just one month, exacerbated by intense and prolonged heat.
Additionally, water temperatures reached 27.7°C during the Ferragosto week, highlighting a rising trend over the past decade. Climate projections indicate that by the end of the century, Lake Garda could experience significant increases in summer temperatures and reductions in precipitation of up to 45%. These changes have been predicted by the Eulakes Project, which analyzes the impact of climate change on major European lakes.
