The athlete from Brescia, Laura Meriano, triumphed in the World Rowing Cup in the women’s pair, alongside her teammate Alice Codato, during the competition held in Varese on June 15. The rowers, representing Canottieri Garda Salò and Fiamme Oro-Gavirate respectively, dominated the final, leaving no room for their opponents and securing a historic gold for Italian women’s rowing, a feat never achieved before in a World Cup final. Even in the heats and semifinals, the two champions showcased exceptional form, culminating in a flawless performance that saw them cross the finish line with a significant lead.
In addition to their victory in the pair, Meriano and Codato also competed in the final of the eight on the same day, finishing in fifth place with only a slight gap from Germany. The eight race was won by Great Britain, followed by the United States and Australia. This weekend in Varese confirmed the excellent condition of the Italian athletes following their recent silver medal at the European Championships in Plovdiv.
