The Lazzaretto of Salò, a national monument dating back to the 15th century, is set to have a new lease of life as a cultural hub. Thanks to a partnership between the Municipality of Salò and the Historical Archaeological Association of the Garda Riviera (Asar), they aim to secure funding from the Cariplo “Places to Regenerate” competition to finance the restoration work. The project aims to transform this unique historical complex in the province of Brescia into a study center and museum that tells the story of the plague and the relationship between Salò and the Serenissima Republic of Venice.
The intervention will require a total expenditure of 350,000 euros to partially restore the site, with the objective of making the historical spaces accessible, such as the church decorated with frescoes and the internal courtyard. Once the restoration is complete, the Lazzaretto will also house the headquarters of Asar and a small historical library of the Garda region. This project not only preserves an important piece of local history but also transforms it into a vibrant place of culture and memory for the community.
