Desenzano del Garda Mayors: Lorenzo Papa and World War I Legacy

The Mayors of Desenzano: Lorenzo Papa
With this article, we conclude the biography of Mayor Lorenzo Papa.
During the First World War, the municipal administration of Desenzano, led by Mayor Lorenzo Papa, faced multiple dramatic emergencies.
Already on May 24, 1915, the municipality had to deal with the requisition of public buildings for military purposes.
The municipal school in Piazza Malvezzi was transformed into a military hospital, while the castle barracks housed the Bersaglieri troops.
In 1916, air raids by Austrian aircraft struck Desenzano, causing damage to infrastructure and terror among the population.
The municipality organized civilian defense measures, anti-aircraft sirens, and blackouts during night hours.
Despite the hardships of war, Mayor Lorenzo Papa continued to maintain public services, food rationing, and aid for soldiers’ families.
In the post-war period, the municipal administration had to manage economic reconstruction and social assistance for war invalids and widows.
Lorenzo Papa concluded his mandate leaving a legacy of administrative dedication and civil commitment in one of the most tragic periods of Italian history.
