Ancient Gates of Lonato del Garda: The Demolition of Porta Verona

The Gates of Lonato: History and Memory of Porta Verona and Porta Clio
In the urban history of Lonato del Garda, the ancient entry gates represented not only defensive structures but also symbolic gateways connecting the fortress city to its surrounding territory.
Porta Verona, erected along the eastern access route toward Verona, stood for centuries as a majestic architectural landmark. In 1906, despite its historical and architectural value, the gate was demolished to facilitate modern traffic and road expansion.
Today, the memory of Porta Verona lives on through vintage photographs and the stone pillars preserved in the public square, offering testimony to Lonato’s rich medieval past.
Similarly, Porta Clio represented another fundamental access point in the city’s fortification system, linking historical memory with urban transformation.
