The Lombardy Region has recently approved the construction of a large tunnel as an alternative to the Gardesana road, addressing the chronic traffic issues in the upper Garda area. The positive assessment regarding environmental compatibility has been sent to the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security and pertains to a tunnel that will connect the municipalities of Gargnano and Tignale, intended to replace the first three tunnels of the SS 45bis. The Regional Councillor for the Environment, Giorgio Maione, emphasized the importance of ensuring minimal impact during the construction process.
Despite the approval, the issue of disposing of the rock material resulting from the tunnel’s construction remains to be addressed. Maione has expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with the affected municipalities to find solutions that further reduce the impact on the area. Additionally, a proposal has been put forward to create another tunnel between Toscolano and the Tormini to alleviate traffic in the region. The Region is now preparing to define the next steps to complete the authorization process for the infrastructure.
