The community of Lazise mourns the loss of Professor Domenico Luigi Bongiovanni, who passed away after a long illness at his home. He is survived by his wife Vera, a brother, and a sister. He was 68 years old.
The funeral will be held on Friday, July 5th at 5:00 PM at the parish church of Lazise.
Bongiovanni was a prominent figure in the field of education and local politics. He was a professor of literature and philosophy and served as vice principal for over ten years at the Luigi Carnacina Institute in Bardolino. He later became the school administrator at the Borgo Roma Est Comprehensive Institute and finally the principal of the Angelo Berti Institute in Verona until his retirement in 2020.
Throughout his career, Bongiovanni held numerous positions at the national level, particularly in the network of Hotel and Tourism Institutes and the European Assembly of Hotel and Tourism Schools.
In addition to his academic career, Domenico Luigi Bongiovanni was very active in local politics. He served as the mayor of Lazise and previously as a city councilor, councilor, and deputy mayor since 1980. From 1986 to 1991, he was a member of the general assembly of the Garda Community, and from 1991 to 1996, a member of the board of directors of the same organization.
From 2003 to 2006, he was a member of the board of directors of AMIA SpA, the municipal company responsible for urban waste management in Verona. From 2004 to 2008, he was the president of SERIT, a company associated with AMIA based in Cavaion Veronese that deals with waste collection and disposal.
Bongiovanni also served as a lay judge at the Court of Appeal in Venice and presided over polling stations in Lazise for decades. In 2021, he received the honor of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
Former mayor Luca Sebastiano expressed great sorrow for the loss: “The passing of Domenico Luigi Bongiovanni has caused a great echo and lively participation throughout Lazise.” Current mayor Damiano Bergamini also expressed his sadness: “I am deeply shaken by this sudden loss… His professional, cultural, and political commitment was known to all of us.”
Stefano Quaglia, former Superintendent of Schools in Verona and university companion, remembers him as an “extraordinary friend and colleague… A noble figure of a man and teacher has passed away.”
A special bond connected Bongiovanni to His Eminence Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, whom he met during his studies at the Don Nicola Mazza Institute in Verona. The Cardinal has already expressed his support to the Bongiovanni family during this difficult time.
The Lake Garda community has lost a charismatic figure who has given so much in the field of education and local politics.
