A new alien species has been identified in Lake Garda: the Trigol Mantovano, also known as Trapa Natans or water chestnut. This plant, discovered in Lugana di Sirmione, is considered harmless and edible, but its presence highlights the vulnerability of the local ecosystem. According to WWF Brescia Bergamo, while it is not currently dangerous, it could pose a threat to native species in the future.
The Trigol Mantovano adds to an already extensive list of non-native species in Lake Garda, with 42 species reported as of 2022. To combat the introduction of new invasive species, the regions surrounding the lake have initiated a legislative project to sanitize boats coming from other basins starting in 2025. The fruits of the Trigol are used in traditional local cuisine and can be consumed fresh or cooked.
