A new DNA test has been requested in the trial for the murder of jeweler Carlo Mortilli, which occurred in May 1997 in the parking lot of the West Garda Hotel in Padenghe sul Garda. Alessando Galletta, a 50-year-old Sicilian considered a presumed accomplice, will undergo further investigations to determine his potential guilt. The Court of Assizes in Brescia has set April 2025 as the deadline to verify the presence of sufficient genetic material, in reference to a woman’s stocking found during the robbery that led to Mortilli’s death.
The robbery tragically ended with the jeweler being shot while attempting to defend his possessions. Two men had already been convicted for the incident: Marcello Fortugno received a sentence of 17 years and 8 months, while Fabio Cosoleto was sentenced to 4 years. During the trial, former RIS general Luciano Garofano expressed doubts about the reliability of the biological traces found, describing them as “not very clean” and in limited quantities, suggesting potential biases in the analyses conducted.
