Padenghe has issued a new ordinance to combat the spread of the processionary caterpillar, an insect that poses a serious risk to the health of domestic animals. The measure, aimed at property owners and managers of green and wooded areas, mandates the inspection of trees on their properties to check for the presence of the caterpillar’s nests. The processionary can cause severe reactions in animals due to the stinging hairs that cover its body, which can be accidentally ingested by our four-legged friends.
The ordinance stipulates that if nests are found, immediate removal and destruction are required, with all necessary precautions taken to avoid contact with the stinging hairs. It is also prohibited to dispose of infested branches within the municipal area, including in designated waste containers or near recycling points. With this measure, the municipality aims to ensure greater safety for animals and to prevent potential risks associated with the proliferation of the processionary caterpillar.
