From September 27, 2024, to January 6, 2025, the Rocca of Lonato del Garda will host an exhibition titled **”At the Origins of the Bel Paese. 19th Century Italy in the Photographs of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection.”** This exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the Ugo Da Como Foundation and the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation in Turin, aimed at celebrating the photographic heritage that narrates 19th century Italy.
## The Photographic Collection of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation
Founded in 1992, the photographic collection of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation has evolved over time, encompassing both contemporary and historical works. Under the direction of Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, the foundation has embarked on a journey to explore the development of photographic language in Italy. Today, this collection includes thousands of images that capture the natural and cultural beauty of Italy, offering a glimpse into the traditions and customs of the era.
The exhibition pays tribute to the European travelers of the 19th century who traversed Italy in search of art and culture. The photographs on display cover various significant locations from north to south, tracing routes that touch on cities of art and famous archaeological sites. Key access points such as the Simplon Pass and the Brenner Pass were popular destinations for those wishing to immerse themselves in Italian history.
## Seventy Iconic Photographs
Curated by Filippo Maggia, the exhibition will present seventy emblematic photographs taken by the most renowned photographers of the time. Among these are notable names such as Charles Marville in Turin and Hippolyte Deroche in Milan, as well as talented photographers active between Naples and Sicily. Each image not only documents the Italian landscape but also captures the spirit of the Risorgimento era.
A particularly significant work on display is a rare copy of the album “Turin Ancien et Moderne,” dated 1867, featuring large-format photographs by Henri Le Lieure. These images provide a fascinating insight into how foreigners perceived the architectural and natural wonders of Italy.
## Practical Details for Visitors
