Porta Verona Barracks Restoration: Cultural Hub and Wine Promotion

From an arsenal and war factory commissioned by Radetzky to a container for culture and promotion of local products. The 150-year historical journey of the artillery barracks, a monumental complex currently in the final stages of renovation between the 16th-century structures of Porta Verona and the San Marco bastions, was presented Thursday during a guided tour.

Interventions and Funding

Reflecting on the life of this structure, a masterpiece of architecture, and focusing on the interventions that are restoring the building to its former glory, were architects Lino Vittorio Bozzetto and Oscar Cofani, who are the designers and project managers.

The entire story of this impressive historical and architectural restoration is almost incredible, considering it was one of the few projects in the Veneto area financed entirely through grants.

“Just over half of the six billion spent,” highlighted Umberto Chincarini, the mayor, “was covered by the European Union, which allocated a specific grant for this purpose. The other half was financed by selling land and urbanization charges amounting to half a billion.”

Future Projects and Conference

The works are expected to be completed by the end of the year and will be visited immediately after Easter by EU technicians and officials.

A conference, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Friday the 20th at the Palazzina Storica in via Parco Catullo, promoted by the Municipality and the Association of Security Personnel, will discuss “Restoration of historic buildings and the construction site safety system.”

Restoration Objectives and Use of the Structure

The restoration of the Porta Verona Barracks was carried out with the utmost respect for original forms and designs, restoring an edifice that will host various services, the mayor emphasized: “It will be useful for the community — from the city’s historical archive to exhibition halls, activities promoting the territory, a local history museum, and spaces for associations.”

All of this aims to foster integration between tourism and environmental heritage, economic welfare, and traditions.

Planned Activities and Economic Use

In this context, among the primary activities that the complex will host, according to the agreement between Comune and the social cooperative Beta, which will manage the structure, are a wine bar with a tasting room, a cafeteria, a shop selling merchandise with wine tasting rooms, and a technical analysis laboratory to support local wine production.

The initiative prominently features the Protection Consortia for Bardolino, Custoza Bianco, Lugana, Garda DOC, Valdadige – Terra dei Forti.

Visit and Promotion of the Territory

The tour of the complex was an opportunity to showcase activities linked to the wine industry, presented by Beta’s president, Claudio Zanoni, along with Valentino Fugatti and Albino Piona, presidents of the Consorzio del Bardolino, Giulio Liut.

Opposite the wine area, beyond the square, is the large Piccard conference room and spaces for hosting a taste festival for Veronese products.
