An important step towards the repopulation of the coregonus has been taken, with an amendment approved by the Budget and Constitutional Affairs Committees of the Chamber of Deputies in Rome. This decision could finally pave the way for the introduction of fish species such as the coregonus into the lake, where such practices have been prohibited since 2020. The amendment proposes the removal of restrictive provisions until May 31, 2026, thus offering new hope to those involved in the sustainable fishing sector, including both recreational and professional fishing. The final approval is now awaited, which will go through a parliamentary vote.
Moreover, there is a possibility that the coregonus will be recognized as a “semi-native” species, as it has been present in the lake since the 19th century. This recognition would allow for the resumption of repopulation efforts aimed at protecting native species such as the carpione. In recent years, industry associations have sought clarifications and assurances from the relevant ministries; now, with the analysis completed by the Research and Evaluation Unit of the Ministry of the Environment, there is hope for a swift officialization of the agreed-upon introductions.
