San Martino in Calle Promotes Community Support and Volunteering in Lazise
San Martino in Calle, a non-profit organization active for one year, was founded as a spontaneous committee among the merchants of Calle Prima. It doesn’t want to be just a club for “celebration.” It aims, seriously, to promote proselytizing among the people and to establish roots within the community to reach those who are less fortunate or have been less lucky.
All of this emerged during the assembly held at the parish youth center. “The association aims to be a point of reference for social life in Lazise and the districts of Colà and Pacengo,” stated Maria Fiorella Azzali, president of the organization. “It intends to raise awareness among as many people as possible to work in the social sector. It should be the operational support for institutions, providing human resources from those who have some time to dedicate.” It is a sort of time bank, a tool to operate within the social fabric through volunteering, in coordination with the social worker and the Croce Rossa di Bardolino.
Humanitarian Action and Support
San Martino in Calle moved in 2000 in three directions: assistance to Suor Bruna Imelda in caring for leprosy patients in Brazil, support to Emergency with a contribution to hospital structures in Afghanistan and Korea for the treatment of landmine mutilation victims; and humanitarian interventions in Lazise.
“These channels,” continued Azzali, “will be pursued again this year, with an important and specific variant for the Lazise territory. We are purchasing medical and support equipment to lend to those in need. I am referring to wheelchairs, crutches, and other aids. The association must become a real point of reference for the people of Lazise in difficulty, those in need of temporary help, lacking medical and spiritual support as well.”
San Martino in Calle is seeking volunteers willing to dedicate part of their time to help neighbors, friends, brothers, and strangers living within the community.
