An important initiative for the protection of fish fauna and the sustainable management of fishing has been launched on Lake Garda, thanks to an agreement between the Veneto and Lombardy regions, the Autonomous Province of Trento, and the University of Insubria. The project, titled “Survey on the status of the fish community in Lake Garda for the sustainable management of fishing activities,” is expected to last 30 months and has a total budget of 570,000 euros. The initiative aims to monitor the health of the lake ecosystem and develop strategies to address environmental threats such as climate change and the introduction of invasive species.
The Veneto Regional Councillor for Fishing, Cristiano Corazzari, emphasized the importance of this project in the context of current challenges, highlighting that Lake Garda hosts over 80 professional fishing enterprises and represents one of the richest freshwater environments in Italy in terms of biodiversity. The research will be conducted by the Department of Theoretical and Applied Sciences at the University of Insubria, using traditional methods alongside innovative techniques such as environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis. The ultimate goal is to obtain updated scientific data to enhance policies for the protection and repopulation of native fish species, thereby contributing to the enhancement of economic activities related to fishing.
