Recent events in Sirmione have highlighted the challenges associated with sustainable tourism and the management of tourist flows, particularly during the First of May holiday, when the area experienced an extraordinary influx of visitors. Barbara Quaresmini, President of Confesercenti of Eastern Lombardy, emphasized the importance of enhancing infrastructure rather than imposing limits on the number of tourists. According to Quaresmini, it is essential to improve connections, parking facilities, and public services to ensure effective territorial management without compromising the quality of life for residents.
In this context, the president underscored the need for a shared vision among local authorities, businesses, and the Region to develop a sustainable future for Sirmione and the entire Lake Garda area. She warned that drastic measures such as visitor caps should be considered only as a last resort, suggesting instead a careful planning of tourist days that takes into account the unique characteristics of the area. The call is, therefore, to invest in structural interventions to align the growth of tourism with the well-being of the local community.
