Sirmione and the illegal cutting of reeds: report from WWF Basso Garda

An illegal cutting of reeds recently took place at San Vito Park in Sirmione, where approximately 500 square meters of vegetation were unlawfully destroyed. The incident was reported by WWF Basso Garda, which has filed formal complaints with local authorities and the Forestry Carabinieri, highlighting the seriousness of the situation in a protected area that is particularly vulnerable during this end-of-nesting period. During an inspection, volunteers discovered the remains of two destroyed nests, belonging to a swan and a little egret, species that seek refuge among the reeds.

The WWF representative, Paolo Zanollo, emphasized that similar incidents occur annually and called for increased monitoring and exemplary sanctions to protect the lake ecosystem. The Sirmione municipal administration is also considering preventive measures, such as installing surveillance systems in the most at-risk areas. According to data provided by the WWF, since 2012, the area of reeds in the Basso Garda has decreased by 30%, corresponding to over 70,000 square meters lost, thereby compromising the natural balances of the area.
