A journey through the canine universe, narrated with irony and depth, is what the exhibition “DogDogs” by Elliott Erwitt offers, inaugurated at Palazzo Callas on March 14, 2025. In collaboration with Magnum Photos, the exhibition will remain open until July 13, 2025, representing a significant milestone in the cultural programming of the city.
Elliott Erwitt, a renowned photographer known for his unique perspective on the world, stated: “I take a lot of pictures of dogs because I like dogs, because they don’t object to being photographed, and because they don’t ask for prints.” These words perfectly encapsulate the essence of his work dedicated to dogs, subjects that manage to reveal not only their characteristics but also the emotional bonds between humans and animals.
An Icon of Photography
Born in France in 1928 and active for over seventy years in photography, Erwitt has captured moments of everyday life and famous personalities with a distinctive style. The “DogDogs” exhibition focuses on one of the artist’s most cherished themes: the relationship between humans and dogs. Andréa Holzherr, Global Cultural Director of Magnum Photos, remarked that Erwitt’s images are a celebration of the special bond between people and their pets. The photographs express humor and lightness while revealing a deep understanding of interpersonal relationships.
Sirmione as a Cultural Hub
The city of Sirmione continues to establish itself as a center of excellence for photography. Mayor Luisa Lavelli emphasized the importance of collaborating with Magnum Photos to bring internationally renowned artists to the city. Following exhibitions dedicated to other great names in contemporary photography such as Paolo Pellegrin and Martin Parr, this exhibition represents another significant step in strengthening the local cultural identity.
A Tribute to Our Four-Legged Friends
Tourism Councillor Riccardo Genovesi highlighted how dogs have become an integral part of our daily lives: “We live increasingly in close contact with our four-legged friends… This exhibition is a tribute to their constant presence by our side.” Erwitt’s works thus provide amusing insights into the daily dynamics between humans and dogs.
A Film to Discover the Master
Alongside the exhibition, “I Bark at Dogs,” a film directed by Douglas Sloan, will be screened. This film explores Erwitt’s life and work through a narrative that alternates between comedic moments and profound reflections. This film further enriches the visitor’s experience by offering an intimate glimpse into the creative genius behind his iconic photographs.
