Students from the Secondary School of Sirmione had the opportunity to participate in an online meeting with **Edith Bruck**, a writer, poet, and Holocaust survivor. This event, held on March 11, 2025, at the Municipal Library, marked a significant milestone in the students’ educational journey, which had already begun with a visit to the Shoah Memorial – Binario 21 in Milan.
### A Meaningful Dialogue
The students shared their experiences from the visit on January 27, coinciding with **Holocaust Remembrance Day**, thereby preparing themselves to engage more thoughtfully in the dialogue with Bruck. During the meeting, the students asked poignant questions about her stolen childhood and family ties, while also exploring the extraordinary strength that allowed her to rediscover hope and love for life despite the horrors of the extermination camps.
### The Importance of Memory
This meeting provided students with a crucial opportunity to reflect on the value of **memory**, ensuring that the atrocities of the past are not forgotten and do not recur. The mayor of Sirmione, Luisa Lavelli, actively participated in the event, emphasizing: “Edith’s testimony, having personally endured the experience of the extermination camps, is invaluable for conveying to our young people the reality of what happened so that it is not relegated to mere storytelling.”
### Collaborations and Recognitions
Miria Bocchio, the councilor for Public Education, Environment, and Equal Opportunities, and the promoter of the meeting, highlighted the numerous collaborations that made this important event possible. She expressed her gratitude to the teachers and Marco Righetti from the Agorà for Peace Association: “The greatest thanks go to Edith Bruck, who once again shares her powerful message with the youth.”
Thus, the meeting represents a crucial moment in educating new generations on fundamental issues such as the Holocaust and the importance of historical memory.
