Tourism and Sustainability at Lake Garda: Legambiente Proposes a Ten-Point Plan Against Overtourism. In a meeting held at the Fraglia Vela in Peschiera del Garda, Legambiente presented a strategic plan aimed at addressing the growing issue of overtourism in the region. During the summer, data shows that tourist arrivals reached 18 million, compared to a resident population of 190,000 people. Between 2009 and 2024, the municipalities in Verona overlooking the lake have recorded a 49% increase in visitor numbers, with Lazise and Peschiera del Garda at the top of the list. This growth raises concerns regarding livability and environmental impact.
To tackle these challenges, Legambiente has developed ten targeted proposals to promote sustainable tourism. The initiatives include integrated access methods to reduce traffic, regulations on short-term rentals in favor of residents, and defining the tourist carrying capacity of the locations. Additionally, it is suggested that the tourist tax be linked to improvements in public services and the establishment of permanent committees to monitor the effects of overcrowding. Through these measures, the aim is to ensure a balance between economic development and the protection of the natural environment in an increasingly critical context for the future of tourism at Lake Garda.
