Pino Mongiello interviews “Mister Croccantino”

Mister Croccantino is Giuseppe Zioni (Salò, 1949), a coachbuilder since he was fourteen years old in his father’s workshop at Rive. He recalls how difficult life was in the 1950s when the only sweet treat at celebrations in his home was a modest croccantino made by his mother. Yet, no one could take away the dreams that buzzed in Giuseppe’s mind, sparked by the racing cars speeding along the roads of Italy during the Mille Miglia. He too envisioned how he could participate in that very race with a car of his own. Thus, the miracle of his Fiat Seicento Multipla was born: a peculiar vehicle whose front and back are indistinguishable. This car would take part in 34 celebratory editions of that childhood myth, from 1990 to 2023. The book, of which Giuseppe Zioni is rightly proud, recounts the emotions, adventures, and triumphs of a man (and his car) who built himself up to become one of the most beloved mascots of the world’s most legendary race.
The presentation of the volume (with English translation on the facing page and many photographs) takes place under the patronage of the Municipality of Salò. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the CSE “Arcobaleno” of Tormini di Roè Volciano.
