Tragedy in Salò: death of Daniele Pavan in rowing

A tragedy struck Salò and the world of rowing over the weekend when Daniele Pavan, a 48-year-old athlete affiliated with Canottieri Garda Salò, passed away due to a sudden illness while participating in the Italian coastal rowing championships in Trieste. The incident occurred on Saturday in the waters of the Julian capital, where Pavan fell ill during the race. Despite the immediate intervention of the attending physician and the emergency medical services, there was nothing that could be done for the athlete; he died on the Audace pier, under the stunned gaze of fellow competitors and spectators. The president of Canottieri Garda Salò, Nicola Benedetti, expressed the sorrow of the sporting community over the loss of an athlete who deeply loved rowing and had recently won an Italian title in the 8+ category at the national master championships. The National Rowing Federation also paid tribute to Pavan, describing him as a role model for the sport and highlighting his dedication both as an athlete and as an administrator. A minute of silence will be observed today in his memory at the Trofeo Coni in Lignano Sabbiadoro. Daniele Pavan’s body is awaiting an autopsy at the Trieste morgue, as ordered by the authorities; he leaves behind a wife and a 12-year-old son, Leo. Italian Version
