Riva Domani Conflicts with Majority Over City Council Verifications

Clash Between the Majority and Riva Domani Tomorrow

It is a war of trenches that Riva Domani, led by generals Bassetti and Torboli, is fighting these days against the rest of the majority — headed by Mayor Malossini and Vice Mayor Matteotti — and perhaps only tonight, at the city council, will reveal whether this is just another skirmish or if the conflict is destined to affect the balances at Palazzo Pretorio.

For now, the “armies” have exchanged warnings, maybe awaiting a large offensive or, more likely, preparing the ground for a meeting that clarifies positions and ends the polemic with some peace offering. But let’s see what the battlefield looks like.

Positions of the Actors on the Field

On one side, Malossini and Matteotti seem unable to understand the reasons behind Riva Domani’s attack. Or better, they believe that the points on which the much-requested verification by Riva Domani should be based are nonexistent.

“They want a verification? — asks Pietro Matteotti — We have no problem with that, as long as they tell us which points of the program they want to verify. Not, of course, about the issues discussed so far, since all have been resolved. Actually, two of these works under discussion (the renovation of Via Gonzaga and the sidewalk at Alberello) have been entrusted to the municipal workforce, which, coincidentally, is overseen by the councilor Emilio Munari of Riva Domani.”

In short, after days of back-and-forth, it still seems unclear what exactly is being discussed and where Riva Domani’s discomfort originates, which began with the resignation threat from councilor Torboli.

“Is it possible — adds Cesare Malossini — that all the forces of the coalition are always Riva Domani raising problems? Is it possible that Torboli works in harmony and in an instant, they are at odds? More clarity is needed. They have now decided to leave the majority, but I wonder how they will vote against a budget that will be presented by Torboli himself in the council. Of course, if they decide to return later, they will have to hear our opinion first.”

Reactions from Riva Domani

On the other front, there are the soldiers of Riva Domani, who were not at all pleased with the recent positions taken by Matteotti. These declarations led to the dramatic turn of events last Monday when, during the majority’s leaders’ meeting, Bassetti showed up only to deliver a letter in which Riva Domani announced its decision to abstain from the majority’s works until the much-anticipated verification.
