Lake Level Stable as Heavy Winds Threaten Flooding Relief Efforts
173 centimeters. For a couple of days now, the lake level has remained steady: it is neither rising nor falling. The data is collected daily by the Foffa family, who manage the Meteorological Observatory and the Seismic Station, and displayed under the porticoes of the town hall. The few drops of rain that have fallen had no impact at all. Currently, from the north (Trentino), as many cubic meters enter as flow out at Peschiera.
A state of anticipation, then. The Canottieri square, flooded, remains closed. Cars must park elsewhere. The water pumps from the hospital continue to discharge water to prevent the boiler rooms from flooding.
Infiltrations and damages
Everywhere, cellars are emptying. The vault at the Banco di Brescia, located in Piazza Vittoria, is also flooded. Some sections of beach near the Tavine have disappeared, literally swallowed by the furious waves from recent days. Along the lakeside, hundreds of sandbags are in place.
Some shop owners, fearing that customers might not enter due to the double or triple layer of sandbags, have put up a sign: “Open”. Business, in short, continues.
Current situation
With a glance at the manholes, where water is gurgling, and a look at the horizon. Apparent calm, then. Hopeful that a light breeze continues to blow. If the wind, like on Friday, picks up, there would be trouble.
Not to mention the winds from Bardolino, which blow directly onto the Cavazza Island – S. Felice – Manerba fortress stretch. Fearing that boats might sink, many have reinforced moorings.
Many others, instead, have turned to the local marinas in search of winter storage. se.za.
